“The Search for Animal Chin”

I must have watched this skate movie over 100 times. In ‘87 when this video came out, I was obsessed with anything that had to do with authentic skate culture. This video opened my eyes to a world I had only read about in Thrasher magazine. Skateboarding in NYC was still relatively new. Seeing this level of skating and styles forever changed what I thought could be done on a board.

In the video, the “Bones Brigade” travel in search of the mythical O.G. skater; the skilled and wise Animal Chin. Along their journey they hit various skate spots across California and Hawaii. One of my favorite scenes is the opener with the team skating Wallows in Hawaii. Wallows is a long winding ditch with a series of step-down levels, perfect for picking up speed, carving and hitting lines. Throw in the occasional bush, crack and bowled corner and you have a roller coaster obstacle course on a skateboard.
